The Côa Museum begins with the recognition of the exceptional
character of the Côa Valley, understood not as a backdrop but
as an active condition of the intervention. From the outset, the
architecture establishes a precise reading of the landscape, in
which human expression emerges from the interaction
between the site’s tectonic force and the individual impulse to
inscribe meaning.
The landscape constitutes the foundation of the building, just
as it does for the rock engravings themselves. The rock
surfaces, as supports for human inscription, establish a direct
parallel between nature and art, blurring the boundary
between natural object and cultural artefact. The museum
therefore operates as a continuation of this logic of
incorporation rather than as an autonomous architectural
object.
The project also acknowledges the existing built traces within
the territory. On the site, property boundary walls are
understood as markers of human intervention, detached from
formal intent yet fundamental to the reading of the landscape.
These walls are reinterpreted as the structural axis of the
museological route, organising the visitor’s movement through
the site. In this way, the museum is conceived as a territorial
sequence, in which architecture, ground and memory are
articulated into a continuous system of movement and
perception.

como condição activa da intervenção. A arquitectura estabelece
uma leitura precisa da paisagem, onde a expressão humana
resulta da interacção entre a força telúrica do lugar e a
necessidade de inscrição cultural do indivíduo.
A paisagem constitui o fundamento do edifício, tal como o é
das próprias gravuras rupestres. As superfícies rochosas,
enquanto suporte de inscrição humana, estabelecem um
paralelismo directo entre natureza e arte, tornando difusa a
fronteira entre o objecto natural e o objecto cultural. O museu
surge, assim, como continuidade dessa lógica de incorporação,
mais do que como um objecto autónomo.
O projecto reconhece igualmente as marcas construídas
existentes no território. No local de intervenção, os muros de
divisão de propriedade assumem-se como vestígios de uma
longa ocupação humana, independentes de qualquer intenção
formal, mas determinantes na leitura do lugar.
Estes muros são recuperados como eixo estruturante do
percurso museológico, organizando a deslocação do visitante no
território. O museu constrói-se, assim, como um percurso
inscrito na paisagem, onde a arquitetura atua como
instrumento de leitura do lugar, mais do que como um objeto
isolado.
