About the project

Within the walls of Óbidos, buildings from different periods were gradually attached, overlapped and connected until they became a single house.

The project accepts this accumulated condition as its starting point.

The Manueline House is almost entirely preserved. Throughout the remaining buildings, the new programme inhabits the existing structure, occupying former domestic rooms, passages, stairs and changes in level. Rather than behaving as a single building, the hotel becomes a sequence of spaces distributed through the topography of the house.

To the south, the complex is extended towards the wall along the Escadas do Jogo da Bola. The new construction follows the slope of the terrain, arranging four rooms on two levels. Small partially sunken courtyards and skylights bring daylight and ventilation deep into the building without introducing dominant new volumes.

The roof becomes the main instrument of integration. New pitched planes extend the slopes and material character of the existing roofs, allowing the extension to disappear within the succession of tiled roofs that defines both the complex and the built landscape of Óbidos.

Lime, stone, timber, terracotta and traditional roof tiles are preserved and extended into the new intervention. The new architecture does not seek contrast, but a place among the different periods already present within the house.

Rather than restoring a particular moment in its history, the project adds another layer: contemporary enough to accommodate a new use, quiet enough to feel as though it had always belonged there.
