About the project

The project consists of the rehabilitation and extension of a house built in 1954, located at the centre of the urban fabric of São Pedro de Moel, designed by architect João Pedro Mota Lima. The house stands as a significant example of Portuguese modernism, defined by the way its structure is organised around two pillars on the western façade, which extend into beams, producing an architectural object of exceptional lightness.

The intervention was developed in order to preserve the original character of the house, with the extension carried out to the east through a new volume defined by the geometric continuity of the existing morphology.

The limit of the extension is determined by the original geometry of the building itself, in particular by the inclination of the west-facing glazing. The programme is adjusted to this given geometry, allowing contemporary requirements of use to be accommodated without compromising the formal logic of the existing building.
