About the project

The Arouca Healthcare Centre is conceived as a civic building of proximity, where spatial clarity and environmental quality play a central role in the daily experience of patients and staff. The architecture moves beyond a strictly functional reading of the healthcare typology, prioritising stable, legible and welcoming environments.

The organisation of the building is based on clear and intuitive circulation routes, reducing complexity and facilitating user orientation. Simplicity of access and movement is treated as a fundamental requirement, supporting a fluid and unambiguous use of the building.

The building is structured around two voids that organise daylight, ventilation and visual relationships with the exterior. Between these voids, a generous and continuous central waiting space is developed, operating as both a place of permanence and a distribution core, ensuring environmental and visual comfort across waiting areas, consultation rooms and clinical workspaces.

The project aligns with contemporary principles of healthcare architecture, which place comfort and the quality of patient spaces at the centre of design. The built atmosphere results from the integration of clear visual axes, thermal, acoustic and daylight control, and the controlled presence of nature, producing an environment of calm, orientation and well-being throughout the facility.
