About the project

The project involves the rehabilitation and extension of an existing school building in the Benfica district of Lisbon. The intervention is developed through an extension process that redefines the morphology of the built ensemble, introducing protected interior courtyards associated with programmes requiring a higher degree of privacy, namely the library and classrooms.

These courtyards operate as spatial devices for environmental control and spatial qualification, enabling a more contained relationship with the surrounding urban context.

A continuous klinker brick cladding envelops the entire building, giving it a unitary character and reinforcing a condition of protection in relation to the surrounding urban landscape. In specific areas, this outer skin becomes semi-transparent, allowing filtered daylight to enter without compromising the privacy of the interior spaces.
